The Light Within: Exploring Light and Wellbeing 

Commissioned by Quays Culture and premiered at Lightwaves Salford, The Light Within is an interactive and thought-provoking installation that harnesses the transformative power of light. Designed and produced by our talented students, the artwork explores the profound impact light has on wellbeing in a playful and engaging way, combining artistry with cutting-edge creative technology. 

To bring this vision to life, the students used an impressive array of industry-standard tools and technologies: 

• Isadora provided the interactive control and logic, utilising sensors and cameras to enable audience interaction. 

• Disguise was integral in managing and sequencing the media, while also hosting the 3D Notch content. 

• Brompton technology powered the LED processing for the ROE CB5 panels. 

• Notch was employed for live generative content, seamlessly integrating interactive data from Isadora. 

This intricate use of technology highlights the innovative and multidisciplinary approach our students bring to live visual design. By mastering tools that professionals rely on, they’ve created an installation that captivates audiences and immerses them in a sensory exploration of light and wellbeing.   

A Real-World Experience for Future Innovators 

Our Live Visual Design & Production BA (Hons) program (LVDP) emphasises hands-on learning, enabling students to work on professional commissions like The Light Within. These opportunities allow them to bring classroom knowledge to life, preparing them to excel in the dynamic world of live technology. 

Added to the real world experience was the challenging conditions our students and staff had to contend with. Torrential rain caused a number of logistical and technical difficulties which the team worked together to solve in a timely manner.
